Prime Video News Takes On TikTok With Short Clips

Prime Video news is taking a page from TikTok. Amazon announced on Monday that it is expanding its news coverage on Prime Video to include on-demand short-form news clips featuring both local and national stories. The move positions the streaming service directly against short-form video giants like TikTok and Instagram, where younger audiences increasingly turn for headlines.

The clips will live inside the News destination within the Prime Video app, appearing in the Trending Topics and Local News carousels. They join Prime Video’s existing local, national, and world news coverage from major providers, which is available to everyone in the U.S. regardless of whether they hold a Prime subscription.

Where You Can Watch

Viewers can access the new short-form clips on TVs and other living room devices first. Amazon said the feature will soon roll out to the web and Prime Video’s mobile apps on iOS and Android.

The company could not yet confirm whether the mobile clips would be oriented for vertical video. Amazon would only say that the content will be considered short-form on both mobile platforms.

Why Amazon Is Chasing Short-Form News

TikTok is best known as an entertainment destination, but it has also become a major source of news for younger viewers, alongside Instagram and YouTube Shorts. Gen Z in particular often follows news creators and influencers on these short-form apps rather than traditional outlets.

Amazon does not have a true social destination of its own. Instead, it is adding short-form video to Prime Video in hopes of capturing Gen Z’s attention and keeping them inside its ecosystem.

What Younger Viewers Actually Want

According to findings from Pew Research, younger news consumers are not drawn to short clips simply because they are short. They want short-form news content that “feels organic, not over-produced.” That distinction matters for Amazon, since polished streaming presentation may not resonate the same way creator-style content does.

A Streaming Industry Trend

Prime Video is not the first streamer to embrace short-form clips. Peacock added support for short-form content in March, followed by HBO Max and Netflix in July, then Disney+ in August.

Combined, these updates represent an industrywide effort to meet viewers where they are. Audiences increasingly look for entertainment in shorter bursts — content consumable in moments or minutes instead of portions of hours or longer.

What This Means for Prime Video News

For Amazon, the short-form push is less about replacing traditional news coverage and more about adding a format that fits modern viewing habits. Prime Video news already offers local, national, and world coverage from major providers at no extra cost to U.S. viewers.

The addition of short-form clips signals that Amazon wants Prime Video to function as a daily habit, not just a destination for movies and series. Whether Gen Z bites will depend on how organic the content feels — a bar set by the creators they already watch on TikTok and Instagram.
