OpenAI Pro Subscriptions Paused Due to Astra Demand

OpenAI has temporarily stopped accepting new sign-ups for its $200-per-month Pro plan, citing overwhelming demand for its newest and most powerful model, Astra. The decision was announced on X by Thibault (Tibo) Sottiaux, OpenAI’s product leader for core products including Codex and ChatGPT.

According to Sottiaux, the Pro plan places the greatest strain on OpenAI’s infrastructure, which is why new subscriptions for this tier are now disabled. “We wanted to take the smallest step that allows us to continue giving the broadest access possible,” he wrote.

The company’s other plans, including the API and the lower-cost Go and Plus tiers, remain available. This means existing users on those plans can continue using OpenAI’s services without interruption.

What Led to the Pause

The pause did not come without warning. On Wednesday, Sottiaux indicated that such a move might be necessary. “Demand for Astra is really unprecedented,” he wrote at the time. “We’re pulling all the levers possible to sustain the demand, but I’ve not seen anything like it until now and we went through very steep growth before.”

He added that priority will always be to keep excellent service for existing users, but that new Pro subscriptions might have to be paused for a while if the surge continued.

OpenAI has not disclosed how long sign-ups to the Pro tier may be disabled. The company also has not shared how many people are signing up daily, leaving the exact scale of the demand unclear.

Astra’s Rapid Rise

Astra launched on September 3 and has been rolling out across OpenAI’s plans, including Pro, Plus, Enterprise, and Business accounts, in addition to its API. The model promises a major leap forward in AI reasoning, coding, and computer use — all areas of steep competition.

OpenAI heralded Astra as the beginning of the “AGI era” and a generational leap, which stoked demand even further. The company raised usage limits for Codex users as recently as last month, suggesting the strain on infrastructure is a recent phenomenon.

What This Means for Users

For now, existing Pro subscribers are unaffected. The pause only applies to new sign-ups for the $200-per-month tier. Users on the Go and Plus plans, as well as API customers, can still access OpenAI’s services.

If you were planning to upgrade to Pro specifically for Astra access, you will need to wait until OpenAI lifts the pause. The company has not provided a timeline for when that might happen.

The Bigger Picture

The situation highlights the growing tension between rapid AI adoption and the infrastructure needed to support it. OpenAI’s decision to pause Pro subscriptions rather than degrade service for existing users suggests a deliberate strategy to protect quality over short-term revenue.

It also underscores just how much demand Astra has generated. OpenAI has experienced steep growth before, but Sottiaux’s comments indicate this surge is unlike anything the company has seen.

For competitors, the pause may represent an opportunity. Users unable to access Astra through Pro may look at alternative AI models or platforms. However, OpenAI’s brand and the promise of an “AGI era” model appear to be keeping demand high enough that the company can afford to pause sign-ups temporarily.

What Happens Next

OpenAI has not said when Pro subscriptions will reopen. The company will likely monitor infrastructure capacity and demand levels before making that decision. For now, the pause remains in effect.

If you are already a Pro subscriber, you can continue using Astra and other OpenAI services as normal. If you are not, your options are to wait for the pause to lift or explore the Go and Plus plans, which remain available.

OpenAI’s move reflects a broader challenge in the AI industry: managing unprecedented demand while maintaining service quality. How long the pause lasts will depend on how quickly the company can scale its infrastructure to meet the surge.
